The Latest Baldur's Gate Information

If you want to have a powerful character in Baldur's Gate without using a cheat program this is the guide for you. I have made a table of the lowest possible attribute point totals for each character class and race combination. This lets you know the likeliness of gaining a high attribute total for the character you wish to create. Character classes in Baldurs Gate have different minimum point amounts for each attribute (strength, dexterity, constitution, etc.) if any of the rolls are less than the minimum for that class your roll is automatically raised to the required amount. So if you were to create a Paladin and the charisma roll was only 4 it would be autamatically raised to 17 which is the minimum charisma a Paladin can have. This guide contains three tables: A basic Character Creation Table, a Multiclass Character Table, and a Specialist Mage Table as well as a Hints section. I hope this guide can help you choose the character thats best for you.

Character Creation Table

Human Dwarf Elf Gnome Halfling Half-Elf
Paladin 57 - - - - -
Fighter 24 32 41 32 40 31
Ranger 60 - 70 - - 61
Cleric 24 37 41 37 42 31
Druid 39 - - - - 46
Mage 24 - 36 - - 30
Thief 24 37 36 35 36 28
Bard 49 - - - - 52

As you can see from the above chart by creating an Elven Ranger you will get the best chance of attaining a high total attribute score having a large minimum allowable total of 70 points while choosing to create a Human Fighter, Cleric, Mage, or Thief will most likely to result in a low total attribute score having a small minimum allowable total of 24 points. But if you want to have a powerful Human Thief don't give up; it's just going to take a lot more rolls to get your desired point total.

Multiclass Character

  Dwarf Elf Gnome Halfling Half-Elf
Fighter/Thief 39 42 38 40 34
Fighter/Cleric 38 - 32 - 37
Fighter/Mage - 42 33 - 41
Mage/Thief - 37 36 - 33
Cleric/Mage - - 37 - 36
Cleric/Thief - - 43 - -
Fighter/Druid - - - - 52
Cleric/Ranger - - - - 61
Fighter/Mage/Cleric - - - - 39
Fighter/Mage/Thief - 43 - - 42

*Note: Gnomes are listed as mages instead of illusionists on this chart for simplicity

Specialist Mage

Human Dwarf Elf Gnome Halfling Half-Elf
Abjurer 36 - - - - -
Conjurer 36 - - - - 39
Diviner 37 - 49 - - 43
Enchanter 37 - 44 - - 43
Illusionist 37 - - 43 - -
Invoker 37 - - - - -
Necromancer 37 - - - - -
Transmuter 36 - - - - 39

Hints

1. Heres an example of what I find to be the best way to get a powerful character in Baldur's Gate:

Lets say you want to make an Elven ranger with 18 strength, 19 Dexterity, 17 Constitution, 15 Wisdom, 12 Intelligence, and 10 Charisma just add up the attributes up to get the desired total of 91, then refer to this page and look up the minimum total for an Elven Ranger which is 70. Subtract the desired total from the minimum total to get the number 21. Now when you create your character in Baldurs Gate all you have to do is press on the minus (-) button on all the attributes until they're down to their minimums the look at the excess points box in the top right and if the number is greater than 21 you have your desired character. This saves you from making any mistakes counting the total because you only have to remember the one number.

2. Always boost your characters strength to 18 because you never know if he/she will have 18/71 or even 18/00 strength it's definately worth checking because it can be a major factor when creating a character. Just a single extra attribute point increase from 17 to 18/91 results in a +4 damage adjustment and a +1 hit adjustment. The best time to do this is after you have already brought your characters attributes down to their minimums.
