INTERNET TRAVELLER By Hilary Ostrov C.W.*

One of the joys of surfing the net is that you are guaranteed to learn something new everyday - and, if the truth be told, you could learn something new every minute! Did you know, for example, that "I-TAL-IA in hebrew means ‘The island of the divine dew'"? I certainly didn't, until I stumbled across the Italian Jewish Network .

The Italian Jewish community is not large, nor is their Home Page (you can read it in Italian or in English) one of the most extensive. But this kosher corner of Little Italy receives about 150 visitors per day - half from Italy and the rest from Israel and the US. Hmmm ... I wonder if I was the first Canadian to discover "the island"?!

Did you know that the Hebrew Congregation in St. Thomas (Virgin Islands) was established in 1796? And yes, they are inviting the world to their year-long 200th anniversary celebration. Did you know that Camille Pissaro, the father of French impressionism, was an MOT - and that he was born in St. Thomas?

Many other fascinating facts can be found on this "Synagogue" page too. So, if you aren't planning to go to the party, you might at least want to visit the Home Page!

Well, I didn't win the 6/49 (again!) this week; but if I had, I would have been able to make my reservation on-line for my stay at any one of the Dan Hotels in Israel . Or find out details (and make reservations, of course) for a "Magical Tour of Jerusalem with special emphasis on its nature and history" - one of several "nature" tours offered by SPNI, the Society for the Preservation of Nature in Israel.

And if I don't win again next week, I think I shall console myself by trying out some of delicious sounding recipes I found on the Asian Kashrus Services Home Page. Rabbi Raphael Meyer, born in Singapore and the Director of this service, is the Rabbi at Yeshiva of the Bay in Marin County, CA (note that is not .ca!). He also provides many tidbits of information on Jewish communities in Asia. Try it, I'm sure you'll like it!
