The resident population of Edmonton was close to 150 because the boatmen had come to winter-quarters at the post.
Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) wrote that our caravan was made up of carts drawn by oxen and horses. We had much baggage: tents, food, tools etc. Our men, good Metis whom I have already learned to know. They are truly our people. Bishop Alexandre Tache (1823-1894) and I love and esteem them. With the gaiety and good will they dispel the tediousness of this difficult and dangerous voyage made so by the heavy rains of the season, and the floods which had overflowed the Mississippi and the Red River Valley. Servants, priests, bishop, all floundered daily in the mud. Dear Metis people, these Memories will oft' recall your name and recollections of you with whom I so often traveled over the vast prairie desert, and, through dense forests, as well as over our wide lakes and endless rivers. They arrived St. Boniface June 27, and four hours later departed for the west. Father Jean Baptiste Thibeault (Thibault), (1810-1879) an Oblate had arrived from the Lac Ste Anne mission (Devils Lake) to inform the Bishop Provencher that Father Bourassa had made up his mind to leave the field next year.
Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) wrote of the trip up the Saskatchewan to Fort Edmonton (Alberta): Our caravan was made up of ten barges (York boats) with a crew of nine men each. One might say that the way of life of these men, during the summer months, was as hard as that of the African slave.
Father Lacombe (1827-1916) clashed with (II)-John Rowand (1787-1834) over treatment of a sick boatman and Rowand retorted that "any man who is not dead within three day's illness is not sick at all." Yet, despite these failings, Father Lacombe (1827-1916) considered Rowand a grand little man. When John Rowand (1787-1854) was sick, Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) would use the same words on him so that he would understand, and Rowand in his fury almost struck the priest.
At this time a trail existed between Fort Carlton and Fort Edmonton and sometimes the traders took horses and rode the 400 miles to Fort Edmonton. (I)-Samuel Robertson (1819-1897) of Orkney and (I)-John McIver (1831-1913) helped build Fort Carlton. They both moved on to Fort Langley, B.C.
The Black-robed Voyager, Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916), OMI, born 1827, Quebec, died 1916, came to the west in 1849, worked with Bellecourt in North Dakota then met (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) at grand Rapids and arrived Fort Edmonton September 19, 1852. He would write of his trip to Fort Edmonton. Without having seen it, one can form no idea of the hardships; the cruel fatigues of these river boatmen. It reminds one of the slaves from Africa. His heart ached for the dashing young men who had so blithely signed on at Montreal, yet many returned year after year. The west would be his parish for the next sixty-five years and he was content to live on whatever the country could provide. He is known for his untiring and fearless spirit , his tattered robe and his red and white banner. The Cree called him Kamiyo-Atchakwet; meaning the noble soul. The Blackfoot called him Arsous-Kitsi-Parpi; meaning the man with the good heart.
Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) would write of (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854): this man like most of those holding similar positions is an example of the Company's spirit and government. Rowand said: the Company is like the Church which recognizes but God and the Pope. With us there is but God and the Company. Lacombe recorded that about 150 souls occupied Fort Edmonton.
Father Lacombe (1827-1916) approached Alexis Cardinal, a Metis, born 1820's at Lac La Biche (Alberta) son Joseph Cardinel and Rose Grise, to be a guide and interpreter. At this time Lacombe could not speak Cree and very little English. Faithful Alexis, as Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) referred to him worked with him for a number of years. Lacombe visited Devil's Lake and noted 15 families of Metis were wintering at this location now called Lac Ste Anne.
The population of Fort Edmonton was estimated at 150 as the boatmen had come into winter-quarters at the Post. The Metis, French-Canadians and English Orkneymen filled the halls harmonious sounds.

At the little settlement of St. Anne, north of Fort Edmonton, Father Lacombe (1827-1916) found some muskrat skins taken out of season and asked a native woman to make them into a collar and cuffs for his coat. When (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) saw the collar and cuffs his face turned purple with rage and his eyes flashed as he yelled, " You priests! You say you have come here to preach what is right. Who gave you the right to wear that fur!" What an example you set your Metis. Father Lacombe (1827-1916) at once ripped them off and flung them in the Chief Factor's face saying give unto Caesar. It was true, the Hudson Bay Company would allow no white man to trap furs or get them in trade for any purpose except the companies benefit. (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) stomped out roaring that we knew only two powers, the Company and God. It should be noted that (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) is a Catholic and therefore well aware of the implications of Father Lacombe's actions. Give unto Caesar.... Some believe H.B.C. was called 'Here Before Christ' because of this encounter. (I)-John Rowand of Orkney married November 29, 1853, Isabella Hisser. Father Lacombe (1827-1916) converted the greatest bully at Fort Edmonton, a Metis called Paulet Paul.
(II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) would later write: I make difficulties where
there are none; people after being so long in the service get useless.
John Rowland Metis b-1833 Cumberland house joined HBC (1853-1869) Saskatchewan
River.
Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) would also later write: "there were a few exceptional cases, where, we must admit, some of our missionaries, some what imprudent, and overly zealous, served us poorly, rather than showing themselves useful." "If we hadn't had the Hudson Bay Company's help and hospitality we would have been obliged to wait for years to found the missions."
(II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) wrote to (II)-Richard Charles Hardisty, a Metis (1831-1889): "every Half-breed is a trader, who laughs at the Company Charter."
Father Lacombe (1827-1916) in need of a good Metis guide met Alexis Cardinal born Lac La Biche, son Joseph Cardinal and Rose Grise who was married about 1846 to Nancy Quintal a Lac La Biche Metis. Father Lacombe blessed their marriage and also baptized their daughter Philomene b-1847. This is significant that Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) recognized the validity of a Country Marriage and blessed their marriage and did not perform the marriage rights. A lot of people don't realize that marriage is a commitment between two people and the Great Spirit (God). They had wintered at Fort Edmonton and ventured to Lac La Biche where a goodly number of Metis had long established a settlement there among the Cree Indians. Lacombe said he was quite at home among these people. Lacombe named the place Our Lady of Victories but Lac La Biche prevailed. They then returned to Fort Edmonton (Alberta).
Father Lacombe (1827-1916) would make Lac Ste Anne his permanent residence as Father Bourassa had returned to St. Boniface. Father Remas an Oblate from France arrived Lac La Biche to support that mission. Lacombe immediately traveled to Lac La Biche to visit the new priest. All the Metis and Indians were away on the hunt leaving Father Remas quite alone in cultural shock. Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) wrote: "We have to respond to and face isolation, discouragement, inclemency, poverty, antipathy and the indifference of the Indians. The missionary, with all his self-sacrifice and zeal, is a man born and raised in the midst of the benefits of civilization. Today, thrown into the midst of a rude people, lawless as to decency and morals, he is not without feeling these inconveniences bitterly." To ensure a more gentile transition Lacombe took Remas back to Lac Ste Anne to teach him Cree.
(I)-Colin Fraser (1807-1867), a trader and Post Manager, at Fort Edmonton assisted Father Lacombe (1827-1916) to compile a Cree dictionary. It is noteworthy that Fort Edmonton was the home of a half dozen languages including English, French,. Cree, Gaelic, Blackfoot, Assiniboine and Beaver. All traders of two or three years in the field spoke Cree.

(II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) died in May (others say June 1) at Fort Pitt where his Metis son, (III)-James Rowand, was Chief Trader. (III)-John Rowand, in his fury, cursed Baptiste Paul, a Fort Edmonton employee who was in a fight. Some says (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) was foaming at the mouth in his fury when he suddenly dropped dead. His wish was to be buried next to his kin in Montreal. W.S. Gladestone, a carpenter at Fort Edmonton wrote there is not a man at Fort Edmonton or Fort Pitt that done any crying for Rowand, everybody is glad. (III)-James Rowand swore he would kill Baptiste Paul for causing his father's death. Some believe (III)-James Rowand hired one of his men to shoot Paul with the excuse that he thought he was a bear in a thicket. Old Norbet Welsh b-1845 a Red River bison (buffalo) hunter, characterized Rowand as " as a wicked man" but he was only 9 at the time, never met him but it shows the spread of a general reputation. There is little doubt he had a hair-trigger temper but his contribution to the development of the west shouldn't be underestimated. Father Lacombe called him "a grand little man" even though they had heated encounters one or two times.

Members of the John Palliser (1817-1887) a wealthy Irish landowner, expedition of (1857-1859) included Dr. James Hector, geologist-doctor, Eugene Bourgeau, a French botanist, Thomas Wright Blakistan and John William Sullivan under Royal Geographical Society, the British government and the Hudson Bay Company, claimed that while the semi-arid area (Praries) was ill-suited for civilization, a northerly fertile belt could maintain stock-raising and agriculture. The HBC did not support colonization as it interfered with business. Why we honor this inept expedition is beyond my understanding.
The Henry Youle Hind (1823-1908) George Gladman and Simon James Dawson expedition of (1857-1858) saw the potential for agriculture of the Prairies basically refuting the Palliser expedition results.

March: About 700 Blackfoot arrived Fort Edmonton to trade.
March 31: The John Palliser expedition to chart the west is commissioned and included: Dr. James Hector, physician and Geologist, Eugene Bourgeau a French Botanist and Thomas Blakiston a surveyor. They wintered at Fort Carlton and the following year at Fort Edmonton. Palliser had written while at Fort Edmonton, "It is great fun to see the black looks of the hostile divines (missionaries). I understand that, sometimes, hostilities have proceeded further than mere looks." The clerics bitter hostilities towards each other and their different viewpoints on Christianity raised doubts in the natives' minds about the tenable and sincerity of its advocates. Palliser was also doubtful of the value of the missionary's activities. This, however is the same man who proposed the madcap scheme of training 50,000 poor boys of London for indenture (slavery) to a Canadian rural existence. Palliser himself departed to the United States this winter leaving Dr. James Hector in charge of the expedition.
May 1: The Cree arrived to trade Fort Edmonton. Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) dispatched a number of Metis with their carts, on his behalf, for the Red River Settlement. He was to travel via the Hudson Bay barges to the same destination.

Some suggest the expedition wintered Fort Carlton. Palliser writing about the prairie turnip said, the root is very dry and almost tasteless, and even when boiled for a great length of time does not become soft, and is at best but insipid, unnutritious trash. The French Canadian voyagers however dubbed it 'pomme de prairie'.

The Palliser expedition broke into two groups one headed by (I)- John Palliser (1817-1887) and the other by Lieutenant Balkiston over the appointment of Dr. Hector as second in command. Balkiston departed with 10 horses, an Indian guide and three men to discover two passages leading to the Kootenays. The Balkiston expedition filed a separate report to London claiming the discovery of two passes through the Rockies..

It is reported that Lac Ste Anne (Devils Lake) had forty-one houses and the Metis talk French, Cree and dress in European fashion.
February 6: The eighteen hunters returned with forty sleighs to Edmonton House. (II)-Nancy Cunningham Metis is born May 27, 1858, Fort Edmonton daughter (II)-Johny Cunningham, a Metis,(1818-1870) and Rosalin L'Hyroudelle b-1829 also a Metis. Nancy would marry 1875 St. Albert a George Gagnon.

June: John Sullivan a senior member of the Palliser Expedition wrote: The Cree reported the peace with the Blackfoot had been violated, and that a very large war-party of Blackfoot was on the road to the Cree Country. The Crees are invariably the first offenders, and, comparatively speaking, the Blackfoot exercise great forbearance towards them in return. This is interesting given this was supposed to be a Cree report?
June: Lieutenant Blakiston, a member of the Palliser Expedition wrote: They (Indians) are aware that the bison (buffalo) are rapidly decreasing, and foresee that their descendants will have to take some other way of living than the lazy yet not luxurious mode followed at present. Year by year they see the animals decrease, and although they consider that they will last their time, and that by them they will be able to keep themselves in tobacco, ammunition, and other requisites, and have an occasional drinking bout, yet they knew too well, as one man expressed himself to me, "If this continues our children cannot live."
Henry John Moberly arrived Jasper House and married Suzanne Kwarakwante Metis

(I)- John Palliser (1817-1887) returned from Montreal to Fort Edmonton (Alberta).
July 26: Big Lake aka St. Albert, (Alberta), marriage, Peter Ward, Metis, b-1840, Fort Edmonton, son, George Ward, b-1810 and Bethsey Turcotte; married, Rosalie Bisson, b-1843, Slave Lake, daughter, Jean Baptiste Bisson and Rosalie Simon.
July 31: Members of the John Palliser (1817-1887) expedition of (1857-1859) heard an enormous herd of bison well before they actually saw it. "[The animals] were in such numbers that their grunt sounded like the roar of distant rapids in a large river, and caus[ed] a vibration also something like a trembling in the ground." This elitist expedition didn't see the potential for cattle or agriculture on the Prairies of future Canada. They didn't wonder what these enormous herds of bison ate? Their final report released 1863 received little interest in Europe and slowed settlement of the west by decades.
August: The British Government declared Vancouver Island a colony and appointed James Douglas as its first governor.
August 20: Blakiston crossed the Kootenay Pass east to west, two weeks before the Pallester Expedition crossed west to east. It is noteworthy that the pass has so much use that the Kutenai Indians maintained the path well. When Blakiston was credited with being the first to discover the Kootenay Pass, he said discovery is subjective, the deer made the first trails, the elk followed the deer, the bison (buffalo) followed the elk, the Indians followed the bison (buffalo), the trappers followed the Indians and then the army officers came along and discovered the pass. It is noteworthy that the army officer is being led by an Indian, Metis or Trader who had been there before, likely many times. Blakiston was amused.
September: Dr. James Hector of the Palliser Expedition set out to explore the Kicking Horse Vallry and was kicked by one of his own horses, thereby giving rise to the place's name- Kicking Horse Pass a.k.a. Kootenay Pass, B.C.
October 17: The Faribault Gold seeking Party numbered 13 men including John W. Jones, Brewster and Gibson of Fort Pitt. These are the first reported gold-seekers to pass through Fort Edmonton. John W. Jones noted that (II)-William J. Christie Metis (1824-1899), son of (I)-Alexander Christie (1783-1872); of Fort Edmonton, is a braggadacio (non-gentleman) referring to William.
October 18: John Palliser, Dr Hector and Blakiston are at Fort Edmonton and advise John W. Jones and the Faribault Expedition not to proceed this late in the year across the mountains. Jones considered the Palliser Party as three cowards.
October 19: John W. Jones wrote that they encountered quite a camp of Freeman on the west end of Fort Edmonton. These half-breeds are not employed by the Hudson Bay Company. This would be the Devils Lake Metis Settlement later named Lac Ste Anne. It was here they acquired Rossette as a guide who agreed to take them to the Kootenay Pass. It is noteworthy that the Kootenay Pass was well known for many years and the Minnesota Faribault Expedition had selected this route before starting.
October 20: The Faribault Expedition, as recorded by John W. Jones, meets a part of Halfbreeds (Metis) and Blackfoot who have just crossed the Kootenay Pass through four feet of snow. They were on their way to Fort Edmonton to trade. They informed Jones that the Blackfoot and the United States are at war. Johns decided that the Kananaskis Pass might be safer. It was, however, easier to masquerade as English.
December 21: Fort Edmonton, marriage Pierre Beauchamp Jr., b-1837 son Pierre Beauchamp Sr., b-1812 and Marie Morin (Morib), b-1810; married Nancy Ward, Metis, b-1844, daughter George Ward, Metis b-1810 and Bethsay (Bethsey) Turcotte.
December 25: Captain (I)-John Palliser (1817-1887) a rascally Irishman and Protestant, shows his true colors with the following accounts of his contact with the missionaries at Fort Edmonton;
"While we were at Edmonton, we were frequently visited by the French priests of the Catholic mission at Lake St. Ann's. Mons. La Combe, the head of the order, was a most excellent benevolent gentleman, possessing many estimable qualities most valuable in a missionary. He spoke Cree well, and had obtained a good deal of influence, not so much, however, among the Indians as among the Half-breeds. Reverend Robert Terrill Rundle (1811-1896) a Methodist, who was only in the field (1840-1848) and who must have been a very able and influential man, is spoken of among them with reverence and enthusiasm to this day. Mr. Woolsey also, the present missionary, is a most excellent benevolent person"

Father Remas and three Gray Nuns (Sisters of Charity) arrived Fort Edmonton then went on to Lac Ste. Anne. Sister Marie-Jacques Alphonse (1836-1879) is one of the group. She arrived at Saint Boniface in1844. Also Sister Zoe Leblanc-Emery is one of the three. Mrs. Robert Campbell also arrived and continued to Fort Chipewyan that spring. Some contend these were the only all white women in (Alberta) at this time.
The Earl of Southesk spent seven months traveling the territories including spending much time traveling the Rocky Mountains from Jasper house to Bow river Fort where they met a St. Paul group composed of Colville, Dickman, Reid and Hind who were heading for the Columbia River area. They also met some advance members of the Palliser party who were on their way to the Pacific. The Earl ran bison (buffalo) on the plains and strove hard to bag a grizzly.
A young Chipewyan, the son of Chief Bear Foot, called on the people of Ile a La Crosse to abandon Roman Catholic practices. He beat up the future Bishop Vital Grandin (1929-1902) and threatened future violence. This likely firmly establishes the Bishops future hatred of the Indians and Metis. The son of Bear Foot believed "eternal life was from the earth and sun".
January: Rev. A. Cowley visited a band of Stony Indians between the Ghost and Bow Rivers. He recorded the band size as 83 adults and 134 children.
(I)-John Palliser (1817-1887) wrote February 1859:
"There are several kinds of employees of the Hudson Bay Company, now diminishing very much throughout these portions of their district, viz., -- the old Canadian voyageur, a hardy, Jovial, respectful, and well-conducted man; also the old hands which used to be engaged from the Orkney Islands and other parts of Scotland; their places are now fast supplied by lazy French Half-breeds from Lack St. Ann's, who, if they are desired to work or ordered to do anything they dislike, may go away as soon as they have received their advances, and join the Indians out on the prairies."
It is noteworthy that all of Pallisler's Red River men, belong to the Church of England, showing his bigotry and disrespect of other religions.
February: Big Lake aka St. Albert, birth Felix Blandion, son Antoine Blandion Sr. and Marie Desjarlais; married 1873 St. Albert, Anne Whitford, born Fenruary 15, 1836 daughter Francois Whitford Sr. b-1835 and Jane Anderson, b-1845.

April 8: C.A. Loveland, a Scandinavian arrived Fort Edmonton to buy supplies but only had United States money. Chief Factor (II)-William Christie Metis (1824-1899) refused to honor his money and put him to work, at a shilling a day, to build a Catholic Church within the palisades for Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916). He completed the church on December 24, 1859 and it was named St. Joachim.
(I)-John Palliser (1817-1887) wrote May 1859 to Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) an illegitimate Scot showing his true colors:
"Poor Christie (II)-William J. Christie Metis (1824-1899) Chief Trader Fort Edmonton is terribly annoyed with these Lake St. Annes rascals, they really are a rotten set. I fear the Popish Priests you are nursing so carefully in this country will be a thorn in your side by and bye. The Stoneys are wretchedly off, the priests are playing the duce with them they seem to do nothing but pray, sing hymns and starve. The 'Cardinal' came down on them the other day, and divorced about 50 of their wives. All the priests of all denominations dine with us. It is great fun to see the black looks of the hostile divines, I understand that sometimes hostilities have proceeded further than mere looks."
It is noteworthy that Christie Chief Factor a Protestant (as was most of his servants) ordered the building of a Catholic Church within the palisades of Fort Edmonton where as the Protestant's used a room in the Big House. This doesn't support Pallisler's report of the situation.
July 28: Palliser journeyed from Fort Edmonton to Cypress Hills and called them "These hills are a perfect oasis in the desert we have traveled.".
Cypress Hills - Canada's first and only Interprovincial park - covers 380 square kilometres in southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan. Sometimes called "a forest island in a sea of grass," Cypress Hills is actually a flat-topped plateau.

August: Lord Southesk, a Briton, visited Lac Ste Anne and praised Peres Lacombe and Le Frain as agreeable men and perfect gentlemen.
August 6: Rocky Mountain House (Alberta), birth Maria Moriah (Anne) Brazeau, Metis, daughter Joseph Edward Brazeau Metis (1812-1871) and Marguerite Brabant alias Salois, Metis, b-1815, Fort Edmonton, (Alberta); married 1881, Fort Edmonton, Josue Pascal McGillis, born March 15, 1856, son, Cuthbert McGillis (1822-1906) Marguerite Delorme, b-1824 Red River.
September 1: The solar storm of 1859, also known as the 1859 Solar Superstorm, or the Carrington Event, was a powerful solar storm which caused a major coronal mass ejection (CME) to travel directly toward Earth, taking 17 hours. Such a journey normally takes three to four days. This second CME moved so quickly because the first one had cleared the way of the ambient solar wind plasma. Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases shocking telegraph operators. Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire. Some telegraph systems continued to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies. When it occurs again during the electronic age it will be catastrophic. Superstorms occur approximately once per 500 years, with events at least one-fifth as large occurring several times per century. Less severe storms have occurred in 1921 and 1960, when widespread radio disruption was reported.
September 15: (II)-John Jessop (1829-1901) and Elijah Duff b-1823 inexperienced gold seekers, finally sighted the Rocky Mountains, a virtual wall of rock. They found there way to Waterton Park. Indians directed them to the South Kootenay Pass.
September 24: The Sisters of Charity, Sister Emery, the superior, Sister Lamy and Sister Marie Alphonse arrive Lac Ste Anne. Sister Lamy recorded her first impressions: After a hearty meal, Father Albert Lacombe (1827-1916) invited us to visit his house. It is rather small, at the most only twenty feet long and fifteen feet wide. It is sealed with mud and covered with bark. The house is divided into two rooms and a living room. The furniture consists of a chair, two stools, a table, a sofa that is used as a bed at night, a stove and a desk. The chapel is also very poor.
