Notes

After teaching for 6 years Ethel married Sandy, a veteran of WW1, whose
family had moved west in 1904 to Melita, Manitoba. Then, in 2 years, on to
Bengough, Sask. Where his father took up a homestead near Viceroy, Sask. The
first summer was spent in a tent while they built a sod house, in which they
lived for quite a few years. After their marriage they went 13 miles north of
Hubbard to land opened up for veterans. In 1945 they bought the Ike Kline
farm next to her parents. After Sandy's health began to fail in 1955, Ethel
went back to teaching in 1958 and retired in 1972. Sandy did keep working
until his death in 1967, as much as he could, with the help of relatives,
friends, and neighbours. Most of the farm was sold but the house with four
acres was kept and served to board teachers until she retired. The house was
sold in 1979 when arthritis got very bad and she moved into a housing unit.
Later, after being quite ill, then going to a nursing home, she took a new
lease on life. She got an apartment in Estevan to be near daughter Betty and
her grandchildren and remained quite active until passing on at age 88.

Notes

Ione recalls a great early life in the Beaver Hills in Sask. riding horses
to school and herding cattle along with other farm chores. Was accepted for
nursing school but finances and needs at home cut that career short and led to a
life on the coast of BC.
Lived in many homes, including tents with young children, while at
various logging camps and in Vancouver after moving to BC. Had a successful
farming venture 1944-48 on Hatzic Lake with 400 chickens, Honey, the cow, and
Dewey, the dog, along with a multitude of calves, pigs, fruit trees and a large
garden on 6 acres. Often cooked, did books, etc. for the logging camp 1953-70.
Resided in Delta (Tsawwassen) after 1965.
