Notes

Art, a clever student who never married, stayed to take over the family farm
in Kelliher. Except for a short stint at logging in BC with a brother-in-law
(where they still worked when it rained) Art stayed close to home. An
enthusiastic hockey and baseball player he helped win many games. He died
early at not quite 65.

Notes

Early life spent in Wisconsin and North Dakota, driving livery teams, working in
logging camps, etc. He took up a homestead in Donney Brook, ND. and worked in
Park River, where he met his future wife, while proving it up. He also took up a
homestead, six miles north of what is now Melville in Canada, about the same
time, hoping to sell the USA one then move to Canada. In 1904 he, along with his
new wife, moved to their little shack, an overnight trip from Yorkton and 15
miles from the nearest phone. All but the youngest, Florence, was born there. He
was often away from home working and pasturing on other land. After a dozen or
so years he decided to try ranching and bought a half section bordering on the
Beaver Hills Reserve where there was free grazing and hay. Low prices and
disease put an end to this in 1922. He worked in Melville as Deputy Sheriff
while the family stayed for a year. They then moved to Ituna where he worked
collecting bills. He finally bought the Kelliher farm right on the edge of town
in the spring of 1925 and remained there also serving as the town policeman for
a time. He liked race horses and often owned and raced them. Also farmed foxes
for a time. In later years often visited in the USA and BC and passed on in BC
at age 84.

The source of birth slightly conflicts with the 1850 census. P. 315 Collins,
Erie Co., NY Aug 8, 1850 which states John E. 1/12 m NY.

EXCERPTS FROM AN OBITUARY. Some of which is illegible, so it is edited.
Friday morning it was heard that John E. Clark, retired farmer and one of the
pioneers of the district, had died suddenly at his home soon after breakfast.
Mr. Clark had been about the streets greeting friends as usual the day before
and his death was wholly unexpected. It seems that he had a dizzy spell which
passed in a few minutes. He had been ill of kidney disease for several years. It
is said the cause of his death was given as Angina Pectoris.
John Enious Clark was born at Collins Hill, New York April 6, 1850 and died at
his Home in Chokio Aug ?, 1926.
Mr. Clark moved from the East and located at Chippewa Falls, WI, later residing
ar New Auburn, WI. He moved from the later place to Stevens county and located
on a farm near Chokio in 1896. During the 16 years that he farmed here until he
retired in 1912, he was very active in community affairs, having served for
several years as supervisor of Baker Township. He enjoyed a wide
acquaintanceship, and numbered everyone as a friend.
The deceased is survived by a wife, seven children and one sister and one
brother. The sister is Mrs. Flora Stuart, of Portland, Ore., and the brother is
Albert Clark, of Erie, Penn.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Chokio M.D. Church,
Rev. E. J. Thorne, pastor, officiating, with interment in the Chokio cemetery.
The pallbearers were: Peter Salmonson, E.J. Amberg, J.H. McNally, Thos. Johnson,
Stephen Burt, all of Chokio, and Geo. Farwell of Alberta.
