When my parents
told my siblings and I that we they were planning a vacation to Disneyland,
we were all excited. But since I had just gone with Pam and Jodi
a few months ago, I was excited, but not hyperventilating. That is,
not until I checked out the Jays schedule, and realized that they just
happened to be in Anaheim the same time that we were. Now, to Jays
fans who live out in Toronto, this may not be exciting at all. But
out here in the west, Jays games are an event, and this one against the
Angels was going to be only my 2nd live game ever.
Our tickets
were on the lower level, out in between first base and right field, so
we had a nice view of Shawn all game!! But, the most fun occured prior
to the start of the game. My dad, brother and I went down to field
level and stood right along the fence while all the pitchers warmed up.
Right in front of us, Billy Koch was warming up with Paul Spoljaric.
Billy was working a lot on his curve ball, and with all that speed and
movement, his pitches would be hard to handle at any time, but Paul was
doing it without any extra padding. One pitch knocked Spoljaric right
down, and he stayed down. So, all the fans standing there, and Billy started
to laugh. When Paul finally got up, all the pitchers went out into
centrefield to catch some of the balls from batting practice. Just
before they left, Billy tossed a ball to a guy beside me in the stands.
This guy didn't seem at all excited about getting the ball, and no one
could understand why Koch had thrown him the ball when there was a couple
of young kids asking for one. Then, this guy gets on his cell phone
and starts talking about Billy; about how there were people waiting for
his autograph, and how he had left all of Billy's cards in the hotel room.
WHAT?? He turns out to be one of Billy's good friends from high school
who now lives on the west coast and came down to Anaheim to visit with
Billy. He then told the people standing beside me what a great guy
Billy is, and I tried not to cry. His friend also leaned over the
fence and got a ball for my younger brother. He now guards that ball
with his life. After we ran down to the dug-out and got Shawn's autograph,
we went right back up to where we were standing before, and Billy's friend
called him over. Billy signed autographs for everyone there, but
when a FOX sports commercial came on the scoreboard screen, he totally
stopped and watched the whole thing. To quote him, it was "awesome."
(It was the one where the old man tries to catch the ball but then gets
hit in the head with it). Just before he left, I asked him what charm
was on his chain, since it's never clear on TV, but you always see him
playing with it. He answered that it was an anchor, because he loves
to fish. After getting Halladay's autograph, we went back to our
seats, and just happened to sit right in front of a family who's son had
been best friends with Shawn Green when they were about junior high school
age. The mom told us about times when Shawn would come over to their
house. Just to cap off the great day, the Jays came from behind to
beat the Angels, the first of the two game series.
