Deep Cove Crier April, 1989"April showers bring May flowers. . ." especially in the Seymour/Deep Cove area! When I moved here just over two years ago, no one warned me that I was moving from the lowest rainfall area in the Lower Mainland (Abbotsford) to the highest (Seymour/Deep Cove). Being at the foot of a mountain, April showers at the Cove are a drenching, sopping, full immersion experience. And I love it!! I love the rain, the sprinkle, the drizzle, the showers. Why??? Because April showers bring May flowers.
The Desert Shall Bloom
Living on the liquid West Coast, it is very easy to grumble about and take for granted the "showers of blessing" that come our way in April. Yet in many, many parts of the world, the very rain clouds we mutter about are the very gift of life itself. Just ask your average Ethiopian how they feel when (and if) "April showers" come. They rejoice... they celebrate. . . they break into joyous thanksgiving! As a prophet of old once said,, "The desert and the parched land will be glad, the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy" (Isaiah 35.)
Joy Is Like The Rain
I believe that a vital key to successful living is the willingness to rejoice over "April showers" Without an attitude of gratitude life becomes nothing but one dark cloud after another. I am not talking about mere positive thinking; I am talking about a quiet unshakable confidence that God can turn everything that's against us to our favour . that God can bring advantage out of sorrow and order from disaster. As Romans 8:28 puts it, "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him" As one song puts it:"Without clouds, the rain can't wash the landNo Showers, No Flowers
Without rain, the grass won't hide the sand
Without grass, the flower's bloom won't grow
Without pain, the joy in life won't show"
No pain ... no gain. No showers... no flowers. No Cross... no Resurrection. The message of Jesus is clear. It is only when we willingly embrace the showers, the struggles, the problems of life that flowers, victories and breakthroughs begin to happen. As Francis of Asissi put it, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving that we receive, and in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Thank God for Seymour/Deep Cove... for the beauty of the trees, the water, the flowers, the grass. Such beauty is striking and invigorating, and none of it is possible without April showers. All the beauty of the Cove comes directly from the Lord of the April showers, Jesus Christ. April flowers bring May flowers.
